Latimer wins appeal for day parole
I can say he's certainly happy, he's certainly delighted," Latimer's lawyer, Jason Gratl, told CBC News. "It's an excellent development." In a move that pleased Latimer's supporters but angered some advocates for people with disabilities, the National Parole Board Appeal Division reversed a decision in early December by a three-person panel of the parole board that denied parole to Latimer, saying he refused to acknowledge his actions were a crime. In a written decision, the appeal division said the denial could not be supported in law and a delay in releasing Latimer "would be unfair." It said the circumstances of Latimer's offence were unique and it was unlikely he would find himself in a similar high-risk situation. As such, the appeal division said it was reversing the board's decision and that Latimer, 54, is to be released immediately.
FISHING: Things not red-hot offshore, but some anglers are having luck
Offshore fishing hasn't exactly been red-hot off Broward County, but a few anglers have enjoyed some amazing catches. Bruce Grigsby, Jon Stewart and Greg Paley. The men were trolling a combination of ballyhoo and ballyhoo with Soft Head chuggers in 800-1,000 feet off Fort Lauderdale. .
New stamp to open doors for hunters
The agency says it has no clear, consistent policy regarding the use of OHVs. The proposed rule would create a nationwide policy of travel management that requires each forest to designate a system of roads, trails and areas marked for OHV use. Once in place, these would be the only avenues that an OHV could travel. Additional information is available on www.fs.fed.us/OHVPolicy. APPALACHIAN TRAIL BOOKS UPDATED If you were to list the most prolific writers on the subject of the Appalachian Trail, Leonard Adkins' name would be near the top. The same can be said of Victoria and Frank Logue. Adkins, who lives near Fincastle, has written a dozen guidebooks, several of them with an AT flair, and the Logues, who live in Georgia, have written three AT books.
There is One Tiger Woods, and Dozens of Hopefuls
This has been apparent to golfers since the world's No. 1 player cut his famous Nike commercial 12 years ago. Although the ad played to his connection to galleries diverse in age, ethnicity and social and economic backgrounds, golfers of all stripes quickly discovered they can hardly associate their games with his. .
State sues Brooks-based contractor for alleged fraud
Attorney General Hardy Myers sued a Marion County contractor Wednesday, accusing the three principals of Ross Bros. & Company of attempting to defraud the state of more than $1 million. The state's lawsuit seeks to keep the firm, based in Brooks, from bidding on or obtaining any government contracts and from working as a subcontractor or supplier until a court orders otherwise. The suit, filed in Malheur County Circuit Court, alleged that Steven M. Ross, Greg Ross and Jeff Howell violated Oregon's anti-racketeering law. They are accused of submitting false documents to the Oregon Department of Transportation in 2004, obtaining or attempting to obtain public funds through false claims submitted to ODOT in 2003 and 2004, and obstructing governmental administration. Oregon's anti-racketeering law, passed in 1981, is modeled on the 1970 federal law that strengthens government's authority to prosecute a pattern of crimes and seek increased penalties.

Finally, for the first time since Game 6 in Dallas, the Heat and Shaquille O'Neal can make some good news together. They can give each the happier ending they both want. They can get rid of the respective headache the other has become. Giants' upset win leaves the Patriots looking imperfect February 4, 2008 The fan in Suite 370 watched the celebration in silence for a minute, alone atop his mountain again, as the winning Super Bowl trophy was passed from one New York Giant to the next, from coach Tom Coughlin to co-owner Steve Tisch to a woman now holding it high. If attained tonight, Patriots' rare feat should be embraced February 3, 2008 "I said, 'It's just another game,' but the truth is I never felt more pressure before a game than that one." Parcells University launched coaches to Super success February 2, 2008 To Bill Belichick, he affectionately gave the nickname, "Doom," because the dour personality the New England coach offers on the national stage was seen first in the private hallways of the 1980s New York Giants.
Swift to have another knee surgery
The team said in a statement Friday that Swift received a second opinion on the latest injury this week from Dr. Steve Lombardo in Los Angeles. The Sonics had said they wanted to spend the remainder of the season evaluating how Swift fits into their remodeling plans. Seattle recently traded forward-center Kurt Thomas to San Antonio partly to give Swift and Johan Petro, another inexperienced center, room to grow. "Robert is an important part of the Sonics, and we will continue to support him throughout this rehabilitation process," general manager Sam Presti said last week. Even before he knew for sure that Swift was headed for another surgery, Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo called Swift's injury "horrible news." Also Friday, the Sonics waived veteran forward Ira Newble.
Writers` Strike Hastens Change in TV Landscape
Hollywood screenwriters should be back at work within days after their three-month strike, but that hardly means a return to business as usual for the television and advertising industries. Those looking for a happy ending to the labor troubles can take comfort from the prospect of hit comedies and dramas returning to prime-time TV this spring following Sunday's endorsement of a labor deal by union leaders. Beyond disrupting the TV schedule, however, the strike shone a spotlight on broad issues facing the industry: how commercial time is bought and sold is badly outdated; show development is too costly; and, most troubling, audiences are shrinking. "The strike kind of moved the industry from a state of evolution to one of revolution," said David Scardino, the entertainment specialist with media buying firm RPA.
What to throw and what to know
If it ain't sunny take the sunglasses off your face; we don't care if they complete your outfit. Sunglasses on cloudy days = only acceptable on Stevie Wonder. And for the love of humanity, keep your spritzes of Fierce to a one-spray minimum. Nobody likes walking down the street behind Mr. Abercrombie. MUSIC There are things that should have died with 2007, and Ingrid Michaelson/Sara Bareilles are two of them. If your fave song was featured prominently in a) an Old Navy commercial or b) "Grey's Anatomy," then it's time to turn it in. Valentine's Day is O-V-E-R. MOVIES The official "Sex and the City" trailer has leaked, and though we're die-hard fans of the HBO trifle, there's just something unsettling about its return. Mr. Big's real name is "John James Preston?!?" We didn't want to know that.
