| Third seed Peer ousted in Memphis tennis
WASHINGTON, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- Teenager Olga Govortsova of Belarus toppled third-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4 at the Memphis Championship on Friday to reach her first WTA final. The 19-year-old fifth seed beat four double faults through the tight semifinal which lasted for almost two hours. "It feels great, getting into my first final," Govortsova said," I am playing really well now and in the third set I wanted to win so badly." Peer, a winner of three WTA singles titles and ranked 18th, said that "it was a good match and it could have gone either way. I had some chances in the first set and I didn't make them." Govortsova, who clinched two ITF crowns last year in her first full season on the WTA Tour, will meet the winner between American Lindsay Davenport and New Zealand qualifier Marina Erakovic in the final.
Hubbard love
Fine, I countered, but for your part, be prepared to answer the complaints that have been levelled against the church over the years: of criminality, of avarice, of hypocrisy, of unwarranted hostility towards those who leave the church or attack it. No problem, they said. Come at 11am. So here I am outside. It's five minutes before the hour and my mind is open, my scepticism is in neutral and I'm as prepared as you can be for a Damascene conversion. My tour begins with a series of audio-visual presentations promoting the church's secular activities, primarily Narconon and Criminon (drug and criminal rehabilitation programmes) and Applied Scholastics (an educational skills set based on lectures delivered by Hubbard at Saint Hill in 1964). Anyone can come in and watch these presentations, though nobody else does when I'm there.
City police conducting monthly parolee checks
This month and last, police did 28 checks and found four minor violations. Nobody was home during seven of the checks. In one case, police officers found a sex offender with childrens toys and a camera, both of which violated the terms of his parole. The Department of Corrections says there are about 35,000 parolees statewide, roughly 640 of whom live in the Springfield area. Springfield police did not have statistics Monday on how many of those are considered violent offenders. DOC spokesman Derek Schnapp said the agencys 471 parole agents conduct parole compliance checks daily, often accompanied by police officers. The new initiative is part of the federal Project Safe Neighborhoods program. U.S. Attorney Rodger Heaton said the program is not designed to put people back in prison.
DAVID LEASK and DOUGLAS FRASER
The research represents a vital contribution to a debate over whether Scotland should take on more tax-raising powers or become independent. Our findings come amid a growing clamour from English politicians and the London-based media to curb Scotland's £26bn spending grant from the Treasury. But, as The Herald shows, much of this mischief is based not on facts but a series of myths, mistakes and misconceptions. .
The Douglases' love story began in the first grade
Dick Douglas still remembers the day he noticed little Janey Lea Hardy for the first time. On a cloudy September day in their first-grade classroom, he fell in love with the woman he's been married to for 50 years. "It was kinda dark in the room," he recalled last week. "I was walking down the aisle between the desks, my memory tells me, and I tripped over her. I didn't see her. She was kinda feisty. She got mad at me and said, 'If you ever do that again, I'm gonna smack your fool head off.' .

Rumor Control
What we heard: In late October, an internal memo leaked out of EA's Mythic studio that suggested the megapublisher was on the verge of wide-scale layoffs to get "costs in line with revenues." The cost-cutting measure hinted at was subsequently explained away as routine turnover affecting a "small" number of individuals, and was associated with the end of a variety of projects. "Small" turned out to be a relative quantity, considering that EA CFO Warren Jenson said during a recent postearnings conference call that around 350 people of the nearly 8,000 that work for the publisher would be affected by the restructuring plan. The first to be hit by the layoffs turned out to be EA's Chertsey office in the UK, which will be shuttered in the next few months. Since then, speculation has surfaced about where else EA might make its cuts.
LIGHT STROKES: Artist colors path to healing
But it is all there for the world to see in a series of paintings that are ultimately life-affirming as they detail the places a child goes to hide when life is too difficult to bear."They said I couldn't tell. They didn't say I couldn't paint pictures," said Rogers, chuckling softly during an interview in his studio on the fourth floor of the old Niagara Falls High School, in the cultural embrace of a haven for artists called the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center. When Rogers ran away from home as a young man, he may have expected the events of his youth to disappear like the monsters in a nightmare, but they remained to haunt him in the recesses of his psyche. These days, he makes his peace with the past in his massive sunlit studio where, with his giant rescue dog Tosca at his side, he toils at the last painting in the series from his youth.
About Journalism.co.uk
Clare is the person to contact about: freelance listings, job adverts, events/awards pages, Smart Moves, the links directory and accounts. Clare originates from a small town down the road from Brighton. Always being a seaside lass you can't drag her away from our pebbled shore and funfair pier (the other pier is burnt to a crisp). She came to Brighton, tempted by the bright lights and relaxed life-style. It was while completing her information and media studies degree at Brighton University that she joined us for a one-month placement. We have not been able to get rid of her since she became full-time in October 2004. If she isn't running around the office, you can catch her sneaking a peak online at her adopted chicken Maureen. Longing for the day she can retreat to the countryside and do nothing but master the art of wine making and try her hand at country life.
Calvary moves on to quarterfinals
Calvary Day 56, Greenville 51 GREENVILLE - Calvary Day and its fans will trek west across the state Friday for the second time in three days. The Cavaliers won't mind, not with a Class A Final Four berth on the line. Calvary's girls won a second-round state playoff game Wednesday for the first time in more than a decade, defeating Greenville 56-51. The tiny west Georgia hamlet is located a short drive from Columbus, site of Friday's Class A quarterfinals. The team bus and fan caravan returned to Savannah on Wednesday night and will head west again Friday morning for the 7 p.m. game. "It's a tough trip, but it'll be worth it," Cavalier coach Jackie Hamilton said. "And we'll be better for it." Better because Calvary proved again Wednesday it can succeed in the face of adversity.
