Lurching from crisis to crisis

The electricity cuts that were to go into effect on 2 December have been delayed pending further clarification. On 30 November, the Israeli High Court asked the government for more information on the impact of proposed electricity cuts, and said it assumed the military would accordingly delay its planned cuts. According to Bashi, the army indicated in early November that it was already installing voltage-reduction dimmers on four of the 10 feeder lines through which the Israel Electric Company, a semi-public utility, supplies electricity to various parts of the Gaza Strip. The military's plan was to reduce electrical supply by five per cent on one of these lines per week, until all four lines were regularly operating at the lower capacity.

But, Bashi said, in information it supplied to the court on 18 December, the state revealed that it accidentally reduced the electrical supplies to Gaza by five per cent on two lines for a period of 13 days.

Michelle Bachelet's triumph

In 1997, when he retired as army commander-in-chief and awarded himself the position of life-senator, Pinochet was still a pivotal figure in Chilean politics. Isabel Allende says that two events outside Chile – Pinochet's 500-day detention in London in 1998-2000, and the subsequent discovery of multimillion-dollar bank accounts in his name in the United States – have decimated the 90-year old ex-dictator's public image and left his lawyers fighting off numerous lawsuits.

“There are people who justified the human-rights abuses saying it was necessary," said Allende. “But robbery is a different matter. In the parliament you see long-term Pinochet supporters feeling very uncomfortable, they can't justify it any longer."

Michelle Bachelet has pledged to change the binominal (or first-two-past-the-post) electoral system that Pinochet bestowed on Chile's infant democracy.

Canada's little case of election envy

In an apartment nearby, Jared Bland had friends over for a gourmet three-course meal and to gaze at the cathode-ray glow of a television tuned to state-by-state results.

On the west coast, University of Victoria students planned to dress as their favourite U.S. presidential candidates and eat organic Huck-a-Burgers as CNN's primary broadcast blared in the background. "There are more people interested in Super Tuesday than the Super Bowl," said the party's host, Mark Stephenson, who was going to dress as Barack Obama.

Win-starved Canucks host Blackhawks

The Vancouver Canucks need a win, badly.

After losing nine of their last 11 outings, the beleaguered NHL team has slipped out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Canucks have a good chance to get back in the win column, facing off at General Motors Place on Sunday (10 p.m. ET) against the 28th-place Chicago Blackhawks, losers of five of their last six.

But the Canucks will have to overcome some obstacles, including being cursed at GM Place, where they've lost five of six games, including 6-2 Saturday to the Colorado Avalanche.

Then there's the injury-ridden Canucks blue-line.

Willie Mitchell has missed nine games with a fractured vertebra, and Kevin Bieksa is out with a lacerated calf.

Police Warn of Rapes After Online Sex Postings

After a rash of rapes in the Temple Hills and Suitland areas, police are warning women to be careful on online singles sites and online communities.

At least six rapes have been reported in the last few months in those areas, some after women posted ads on Craigslist looking for sex. In the most recent sexual assault on February 19th, police say they responded to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue for reports of a rape in Suitland.

The victim said she met the suspect on a chat line and agreed to meet with him. When the victim met the suspect, he showed a handgun and raped her in the building stairwell.

Major Dan Dusseau, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division, said, "We want to alert women who are soliciting for sex online to use caution.

Mitt Romney to withdraw from presidential contest

This is yet another reason why I support Obama. He's not playing any political games, his passion for this country speaks for itself. Senator Clinton always makes the comment that she has experience and that Obama does not. This may be yet another reason why she should not be president. She's used to the political games, etc. We don't need someone experienced in how to play the same games and use the same tired tactics that have been used for decades. We need someone who actually cares about the American people and is willing to do right whether or not he's losing votes. Obama is the real deal. Clinton's games prove that over and over again.
