| Scottish & Newcastle deal marks the end of an era
The deal also raised concerns from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) over consumer choice and the future of S&N's products which include John Smith's, Newcastle Brown Ale and Foster's alongside the familiar Scottish brands.Mike Benner, the organisation's chief executive, warned: "The inevitable result of consolidation is brewery closures, brand losses and less choice for Britain's consumers."S&N began in 1749 when Younger noticed a niche in the market. With plans for the New Town fast progressing, the construction sites were filled with working men.A canny Younger thought it a prudent business plan to quench their thirst, and soon, the likes of his Edinburgh Pale Ale found widespread favour. After two centuries of consolidation in its heartlands and a successful expansion internationally, S&N's portfolio held big-name brands including Kronenbourg 1664, McEwan's and Strongbow cider. From that humble brewery in Leith emerged one of Scotland's most successful companies, proud to still be headquartered in its home city, exemplified by its successful rebuttal of a takeover attempt by Australian brewer Elders IXL in 1988, when S&N's feisty political savvy made much of its Caledonian roots.According to Mr Waterson, that trait ought to be seen by Carlsberg and Heineken as an asset to build on.He said: "We appreciate that business must move on, but maintaining the ethos of S&N is vital.
TSA gets touchy-feely with new blog
Last week the TSA added a blog to its Web site in the hopes that this bit of interactive technology might “facilitate an ongoing dialogue on innovations in security, technology and the checkpoint screening process." Titled the “Evolution of Security," the blog invites travelers to post comments, questions, complaints and perhaps even a few compliments about all manner of TSA issues. Now you may be inclined to think that that the TSA would screen out all but the most complimentary entries. However, a flurry of blog postings from irked travelers convinced the TSA on Thursday to cancel a pilot program. According to TSA spokesman Nico Melendez, a few dozen posts described what seemed like an irritating new policy requiring passengers to remove all electronics — not just laptops — from their carry-on bags at security checkpoints.

Nine years later, murder of Yale senior still unsolved
Less than six hours before she was killed, Suzanne Jovin, a 21-year-old Yale student, turned in a draft of her senior essay. It was Dec. 4, 1998, just a week before the final copy was due. In 21 single-spaced pages on “Osama bin Laden and the Terrorist Threat to U.S. Security," she examined the terrorist's already prominent organization. Her paper was virtually complete, except for the conclusion. In neat handwriting on the margins of page 20, she wrote about the final paragraphs: “I'm saving the conclusion for last." “She had a few hours more work to go," says James Van de Velde '82, her senior essay adviser and the instructor of her political science seminar, “Strategy and Policy in the Conduct of War." In the unfinished paragraphs, which were provided to the News by Van de Velde, she ended her paper with a warning to foreign-policy makers: “To ultimately defeat bin Laden in his ‘holy war' against the United States and the non-Muslims, we must be prepared to ‘stand some more heat.' Certainly, there is nothing to suggest that this ‘holy war' will turn cold anytime soon." But Jovin would never know how true her words were.
Super Tuesday Snapshots: Obama’s Jewish Neighbors, Peace at the ...
Barack Obama may have a deadlock on at least one segment of the Jewish community: his neighbors. KAM Isaiah Israel, the oldest synagogue in Chicago, is directly across the street from Obama's house. Members of KAM, a large Reform synagogue, report having seen the Illinois senator engaged in mundane activities around their Hyde Park neighborhood, like buying toothbrushes at Walgreens with his daughters. But Obama's Secret Service agents spend more time at the synagogue than Obama himself — especially when they need to use the bathroom. “They came in to introduce themselves and to apologize in advance for any disruption that their presence might have," said Sandy Lieberman, KAM's executive director. Lieberman, in turn, offered to let them use the synagogue's restrooms.
Tough guy Thackeray: From the days of Raj
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has been hitting headlines frequently since last week. But who exactly is Raj and how does he hope to politically benefit from the arrest? CNN-IBN looks for answers. An arts graduate from Mumbai's JJ School of Art, Raj is the son of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's younger brother Shrikant Thackeray. But Raj chose early to follow the footsteps of his charismatic uncle. Like Bal Thackeray he became a cartoonist but it was politics that most fascinated Raj. He would accompany his uncle to all his rallies and public functions. Soon he began to address sainiks – displaying the same mannerism and aggression that his uncle was known for. Raj was credited with the rise of the Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Sena, and widely seen as heir apparent to Bal Thackeray's throne.

"If he had a bad game, it was my fault ... if he had a good game, it wasn't because of me." Simpson caught the same flak over her Dallas Cowboys hottie. .
