There's more to be wrung from state budget
Post a comment. View latest comments. There were no surprises in Gov. Jon S. Corzine's call for New Jersey to slash spending during his budget address yesterday before the Legislature. All in all, that lack of novelty was somewhat of a disappointment. So was the absence of an even more aggressive strategy to rescue New Jersey from the brink of financial ruin. Corzine had telegraphed most of his budgetary maneuvers days in advance of his Statehouse speech, and those proposals that had anything to do with the streamlining of state government were especially welcome. The problem is such recommendations were few and far between. In fact, one special item aid to local education would get a significant bump of $550 million in state aid; the additional money is needed to float the state's new school-funding formula, which is designed to apportion more state dollars to economically disadvantaged students who live outside the state's poorest school districts, the so-called Abbotts.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you're not a terrorist. There's no plan to blow up a ballpark on your laptop, no Al-Qaeda cell phone numbers in your Fave Five. You might walk through life convinced that you're immune to a frightening invasion of privacy — after all , you've got nothing to hide. Well, think again, because if part of that journey involves re-entering the U.S., you might learn what a serious invasion of privacy feels like. Did you know that U.S. Customs and Border Protection can force passengers to give up full access to electronic files, even seizing them for indefinite periods? "This is an issue that affects anyone who crosses the border," explains Marcia Hofmann, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group that filed a lawsuit to seek clarification on such seizures.
Letter: On sheriff’s race
The things that I pointed out in my previous letter are some of the things I have witnessed myself so there are the "facts" as far as that goes. So where are your facts can you prove that Mr. Mckinney has ever paid for gas out of his own pocket to put into his county vehicle and not only that how about the miles that he would be racking up on the county vehicle while campaigning. As far as the uniform in case you have not noticed Mr. Mckinney does not wear one he wears plain clothes with his badge and gun. Having a member of my family in law enforcement I know that all he has to do is remove his badge and gun and still be presentable. How about instead of making excuses for candidates we accept the facts and not be blind followers as in the past. I would also like to state that as far as mudslinging I have not taken part in any nor will I.
Railers miss 23 foul shots in OT defeat
Aaron Williams' favorite television show is “Heroes," and he almost became one Thursday night. The Reading Railers 6-8 forward miraculously sent the game into overtime, scoring a layup at the buzzer. Within a 30-second span of OT he knocked down a pair of free throws to snap a tie, took a charge, then threw down a slam for a four-point lead with half a minute left in the Railers' Premier Basketball League game against visiting Quad Cities. Finally, with his team down two and just a second remaining, he was fouled going to the hoop and needed to drain two more free throws to fend off a fifth straight defeat. By that point, some three hours into this wild, physical and sometimes bizarre affair against the Riverhawks, the former West Chester star was out of magic. He missed both shots and Reading fell once again, this time by 124-122.
Red Mosque Opration
The eight-day long “operation silence" has ended with the death of Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, and his 70 aides in addition to 8 security troops, including a lt. colonel and a captain. Contrary to his “hardline" brother, Maulana Abdul Aziz, who was arrested while trying to flee in Burqa on the second day of operation, Maulana Ghazi refused to surrender and fought till last bullet. The 80-year old mother of Maulana Ghazi was also killed in the operation, however security forces claimed that she died due to suffocation. Though, the operation is over, mystery still shrouds the breakdown of talks between an Ulema delegation, and Maulana Ghazi that led to bloodshed. Qari Hanif Jalahindari, one of the members of four-member Ulema delegation which was supposed to meet Mr.
