Breakaway churches begin to organize amid confusion

Luke's subsequently voted to leave the Ohio diocese and aligned itself with CANA, which was formed in April 2005. The organization now claims 118 clergy and 161 congregations, compared with 19 clergy and 14 congregations in November 2006.

CANA consecrated Ames and three others to serve as suffragan, or assistant, bishops to Minns on Dec. 9 in Herndon, Va. Their ordinations were in response to the rapid growth in CANA's membership, Minns said.

Ames oversees the 16 parishes in CANA's Great Lakes region. The region includes the five churches that have left the Cleveland-based Ohio Diocese of the Episcopal Church: St. Luke's, Church of the Holy Spirit in Akron, St. Barnabas in Bay Village, Church of the Good Samaritan in Cleveland and St. Anne in the Fields in Madison.

Jakey G was looking happy again! The adorably clean-cut actor was spotted in a good mood making his way around LA on Friday. His new look definitely makes him seem younger, but we're glad that he finally ditched the scruff and decided to show off his cute face again. Maybe he did it for his Valentine's Day date with Reese. Then again, Jake might just be already getting fancied up in preparation for the Oscars next weekend — his is one of the many faces we're hoping to see on the red carpet.

Encinitas approves beach smoking ban

This smoker.... wrote on Feb 21, 2008 3:45 PM:would love to blow smoke in all your faces. Good luck with that!! Breathing better air? yeah, right! Then I think you need to move out of the state!!

Hippy KID wrote on Feb 21, 2008 3:56 PM:Smoking is a terrible habit but i'll spare you my solilloquy on the matter. Bans like this are a big victory for EVERYONE including the smokers in that the environment will be cleaner, less of a health issue, physcholgoical impact of the smokers realizing smoking opportunities are slowly dwindling perhaps opening there eyes up to the general consensus of world populations. Now take all those reasonings and apply it to global bans such as "banning car manufacturers from making SUV'S/TRUCKS - or if that is too cut-throat at least put a limit or cap on the amount of fuel a car can burn.

St George lifts lid on ticking bomb

But that trend is set to change this year as rising interest rates drive up risk premiums and claims. On a best-case scenario these banks will suffer a decline in the profitability of their captives. But if rising unemployment triggers a spike in loan write-offs, the captives could generate big losses. St George has the most to lose from the souring of the credit cycle. Its mortgage captive generated more than $65 million, or 5 per cent of group profit, last year on a robust underwriting performance and solid investment earnings. The bank yesterday signalled that its captive will take a big hit on investments in the first half, but defended the credit quality of the underlying mortgage book. "In the current year, volatile investment markets are having an impact, but our underwriting business continues to perform in line with expectations and remains well capitalised," said St George spokesman Jeremy Griffith.

Burke links set to see ALP MP expelled

A WEST Australian Labor MP is facing expulsion from the ALP and possible criminal action following a new report exposing her links to disgraced former premier Brian Burke.

Premier Alan Carpenter moved today to expel upper house MP Shelley Archer from the Labor party over her links to Mr Burke, a man she describes as her "mentor".

Mr Carpenter described the behaviour of Ms Archer, partner of militant union boss Kevin Reynolds, as "completely unacceptable".

"She said she won't resign, so I want her expelled," he said.

Ms Archer is the latest in a string of political figures tainted by their links to Mr Burke and his lobbying partners.

Mr Carpenter has already sacked three WA Government ministers over improper dealings with Mr Burke and his partner, Julian Grill, after the pair's lobbying activities were examined by the state's Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC).

COLUMNIST: Ex-Lions coordinator Mike Martz a 'dubious' hire for 49ers

That's what the upcoming 49ers season will be like. It is hard to say whether Nolan or Martz will play the role of Hooterville mayor. But we are bound to witness some comical cultural head-butting between them.

Let's review these two main characters, shall we?

Nolan is the endorphin-soaked defensive guy who views every football game in terms of field position and grunting. His favorite 49ers offensive play last season, no joke, was an onside kick.

And Martz? He is full of passphetamine - a hormone I just invented - and is aggressively offensive. He throws as many wild X's and O's onto the field as possible, to see which of them stick. Then he throws some more.

Anyone else sense a possible conflict brewing?

In an ideal world, Nolan would control the defense and Martz could coach the offense to create a better 49ers universe on both sides of the ball.

Dora Bakoyanni ends visit to Cyprus

The authorities have been on the defensive ever since trying to contain the damage while the reputation of the police sinks to a new low.

Papadopoulos has personally vouched for the safety of the person who captured the scenes on video in an effort to secure crucial testimony. Apparently, the mystery figure who took the film gave a copy of the tape to the Attorney General last December on the proviso he would not go public with it.

"We couldn't show the tape to anybody because we had promised the person who gave to us not to do so. He still refuses to come forward," said the Attorney general.

He said the case would greatly benefit if the mystery person submitted the original tape accompanied by an eye-witness account.

Abhorrent

In seeing the tape, Clerides, and his appointed criminal investigator Savvakis Nicolaides, understood the seriousness of the charges but those suspected of being involved were not suspended from duty.

Musical Love Story Disgustingly Wonderful

Minutes before the Adams Pool Theater doors were scheduled to open for the inaugural performance of the ribald sex farce “Maude and Harold a Musical Love Story ‘on ice'" co-producers and co-writer Patrick D. Swieskowski '06 issued a stern warning to the house managers: “Don't let any kids in." A potboiler warning reading “not suitable for children" appeared prominently on the production's playbills, but Swieskowski wasn't taking any chances. And for good reason: the show's script—co-written by Swieskowski, Samuel M. Johnson '06, co-producer Farley T. Katz '06, Michael C. Mitnick '06, and Andrei Nechita '06—was peppered with ear-withering foul language, gratuitous strip teases, glib drug abuse, cringe-inducing 9-11 gags, and blasphemous musical interludes. Fun for the whole family? Hell no. But, depending on how easily you're offended, a lot of fun nonetheless.
