SyFy 101: Sometimes Dead Is Necessary

However, the creative forces behind modern entertainment have trivialized the concept of death to the point of making it ridiculous. Genre shows are overusing the concept of temporary death ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Supernatural" and "Heroes" come to mind), and it is becoming a tired cliche used to bring in viewers during sweeps week. For death to be meaningful, it needs to be permanent.

When introduced properly, cheating death can be a central, orienting element. The Cylons in "Battlestar Galactica" are defined by their ability to respawn. In "Torchwood," it is known from the beginning that Capt. Jack Harkness is unable to die. In "Heroes," Claire Bennet's super power is her inability to stay injured or dead, and it is a defining element of her character. These characters generally are exceptions to the rule, but increasingly, the rules are being broken, and the results are disappointing.

Online Dating's Security Complex

All is not lovey-dovey in the high-stakes online dating industry.

The contentious issue of the moment — pitting one of the three biggest companies, True.com, against its major rivals — is whether online dating services can enhance their clients' safety by conducting criminal background screenings of would-be daters.

Last month, New Jersey became the first state to enact a law requiring the sites to disclose whether they perform background checks. True.com — the only large online dating service that already does such screenings — was elated by its successful lobbying and hopes other states will follow suit.

On holiday with vacation home exchange

Pick a travel destination and you just might find a fellow traveler there who'd be willing to trade places with you through a vacation home exchange. An increasing number of websites (even Craigslist) can link you with others who want to see the world and save some cash by exchanging living quarters. And at a time when recession forecasts might have you clutching your weak dollar even tighter, a house swap could be the difference between going to London to see the queen or staying home.

If you're willing to take an unconventional route to dodge obstacles like rising fuel costs and unfavorable exchange rates, swapping your home could help you get exactly where you want to go.

"Accommodations are the single biggest expense of your trip," says Helen Bergstein, a Bayonne native and frequent house swapper who owns the 9-year-old vacation home exchange website Digsville.com.

“You're indicating that you don't trust what you're secretary says or you don't trust what your undersecretary says because you have to have your very own adviser, you have to have your very own assistant to report to you on what is needed by government," pahayag ni Briones.

BHP considers selling petroleum arm - report

BHP Billiton's board is considering selling its petroleum arm in a bid to help finance a hostile takeover of Rio Tinto, according to a British newspaper.

BHP's financial advisers, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, were understood to have flown to China to sound out potential bidders for BHP Petroleum, which could be worth more than £20 billion ($45.8 billion), The Sunday Times reported today. There would also be interest in the oil and gas fields from other international buyers, the paper said. According to The Sunday Times, BHP is considering whether to table a hostile, all-paper bid of £81 billion ($185 billion) for Rio and is arranging a US$70 billion ($76 billion) bank facility through Citi to refinance some of Rio's debts if a takeover is successful. About US$30 billion ($32.9 billion) could be used as a cash sweetener for Rio shareholders.
