PM wants university headscarf ban lifted asap

TURKISH Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wants a ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities abolished "as soon as possible" despite harsh objections from secularists, Anatolia news agency reported.

"We want this issue to be resolved as soon as possible within the democratic parliamentarian order... It is time for this problem to come to an end," Mr Erdogan told a gathering of his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul, Anatolia reported.

The AKP reached a preliminary deal with an opposition party on Thursday on a constitutional amendment to lift the ban, despite severe criticism from the judiciary and members of the academic community.

The AKP, the offshoot of a now-banned Islamist party, has long opposed the ban, arguing that it violates both the freedom of conscience and the right to education.

Jim Salisbury: A window on how arbitration works

Some are downright absurd. Such as the one involving a pinch-hitter several years ago. An agent recalled the story yesterday.

"He was one of the best pinch-hitters in baseball," the agent said. "That's what he did. He was a lefthanded pinch-hitter. He hit singles and doubles. He rarely entered the game in any other capacity."

Management opened the hearing by skewering the player:

There are five things you need to do in baseball: Hit, hit for power, run, throw and field. This player can't field, can't throw and can't run. He's got no power, and he only hits righthanded pitching. So he only has one-half of the five tools a baseball player needs.

The player won the case.

"Management's argument was so absurd it was helpful," the agent recalled.

Holy matrimoney: Couple on newlywed reality TV show

Show business brought them together, and now Dana and Steve Krashin are hoping it will help their marriage get off to a well-financed start.

The couple, high school sweethearts who met at Framingham High School during a musical production of "Working," now live in New York and are one of seven couples to be featured in "Here Come the Newlyweds," a reality show debuting March 2 on ABC.

The show, a cross between "The Newlywed Game" and "Survivor," pits the seven couples against each other through a series of challenges. Winners get to add to a pot of money they'll take away if they come out on top, while losers are voted off the show by other contestants.

Among the challenges the husband-and-wife teams face in the first episode is one in which blindfolded husbands are asked to identify their wife's kiss and a test to see whether wives can direct their blindfolded husbands through an automobile obstacle course.

Call for GCSE languages regrade

The Association of Language Learning (ALL) had suggested to a review of languages by Lord Dearing that there should be adjustments to the grading of GCSEs to redress what it said was the imbalance between languages and other subjects.

England's QCA, in a report, says there are counter-arguments and that instead the focus should be on improving teaching and raising pupils' performance.

It says: "The present examination system is not based on an aptitude-based conception of comparability and its adoption would create a major threat to public confidence in students' results.

Laser shone at aircraft over Sydney

The incidents were reported to have occurred at Merrylands between 9.30pm (AEDT) and 10.30pm yesterday.

A member of the public also tipped off police about a laser light being pointed at vehicles and aircraft from a car at the same time at nearby Pendle Hill.

Police have been spoken to a number of people and have seized a laser.

After a similar incident last year, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority said laser lights could endanger aircraft by temporarily blinding the pilots.

The federal transport department said last year it had identified up to 20 laser incidents across Australia, including one involving a Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft.

In another recent incident, a laser was shone into an emergency helicopter carrying a critically ill patient as it flew over Sydney's inner west last September, forcing the pilot to delay landing.
