Community Center designated as “in need”
The Alliance said that though the Community Center continues to provide space for local events and cultural affairs, it is in need of repair. The cost of completely renovating the center is estimated at several million dollars. However, with technical assistance and appropriate funding, it could continue to serve the community. The Community Center is currently on the Ely City Councils building needs assessment list. The top 10 listing does not garner any renovation funding, but the designation draws attention to the building and its historical significance. At their Feb. 7 meeting, city council members extended their appreciation to Ely writer Mike Hillman for his participation in attaining recognition for the center. Hillman said he was originally approached by council member Mark Zupec to write the application to the Alliance selection committee.

The Laird Of Lesmahagow
At a Burns supper, you stand up with total strangers, whether they're black, white, left-wing or whatever, and you all sing Auld Lang Syne. "It's a powerful vehicle for getting people together. "His poem A Man's A Man For A'That is also very anti-racist. There's no social hierarchy in Burns'mind. "Burns doesn't belong just to Scots. If you have a poet who can write with wisdom, he can cross generations and cultures. That's why he's so big." A NIGHT FOR SHARING BURNS Night might be a Scottish celebration but it's the perfect chance for people from different cultures to come together. Breaking color barriers on course
The effort began in 1951, when two groups of blacks were twice denied access to the course. They petitioned park and recreation commissioners to open it to blacks. Commissioners turned them down. So 16 black golfers sued, arguing that they ought to be allowed to play at Bonnie Brae because it was city-owned and they were taxpayers. Legally, there was a hitch. Forty acres of the park had been donated in 1929 by Osmond Barringer, who stipulated in one clause that if blacks used the park and golf course, his land would be returned to him. Represented by NAACP lawyers, the black Charlotteans challenged the clause. It was upheld by a state court and the N.C. Supreme Court. The black golfers appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case, effectively upholding the state decision.
