| Air Canada flight plummets, makes emergency landing
As Air Canada Flight 190 swayed, dipped and plunged thousands of feet, passenger Jayne Harvey said her own personal prayer. "Make this fast. Don't make it painful and take good care of my family," the mother of three said to herself. Next to her, she said, a woman was thrown across the aisle and broke a collarbone. .

S.F. deputy chief demoted after domestic flap
Police Chief Heather Fong has demoted the department's deputy chief of patrol to the rank of captain for his having "inappropriately handled" a domestic abuse incident involving his off-duty rookie officer son, authorities said Thursday. "Effective Saturday, Deputy Chief Stephen Tacchini will return to his permanent civil service rank of captain," Sgt. Neville Gittens, a department spokesman, said in a statement that did not explain the basis for the action. Tacchini, a 31-year veteran officer, served less than a month as deputy chief of the department's field operations bureau. Tacchini's salary will drop from $220,000 a year to $163,000 annually. While command staff officers may revert to lower captain or lieutenant rank as part of a change of administration, this is the first time in recent memory a deputy chief has been reduced in rank to a captain by a chief still in office.

Making dreams come true for sick Cameron
CAMERON SPROTT felt his heart sink as the class watched the short film detailing the adventure pursuits they could expect at an activity centre in England. As the only one in his primary five class at Lasswade Primary not going on the trip, the nine-year-old's sadness grew at almost the same rate as the excitement of his fellow pupils. .
First steps for a marriage made in Spring Street
Invitations to the wedding breakfast haven't yet been dispatched, but the happy couple promised that at least five Nats would partake with them at the head table, which probably means fewer Liberals and a few noses out of joint. But, hey, you can't have absolutely everyone at the reception. In the end their union simply made sense: the pair saw eye-to-eye on all the big issues, none more so than the state's water needs and John Brumby's "betrayal" of the bush, as well as the Government's willingness to "divide Victorians". Baillieu nominated a pervading whiff of corruption in the Garden State as a further spur to their alliance; problem gambling another, though in the past the newlyweds have bickered about how best to beat it. But, no, this wasn't a "rush back to the altar", as suggested by one observer.
Is Keith Olbermann the Next Edward R. Murrow?
There would be outrage from the on-the-air zombies now doing the news from the Land of the Living Dead. If the new concept caught on, they too would need to find something to say about the news they are mindlessly reporting. It would change the face of network TV news. TV is an art form that suffers from kleptomania. They would rather steal something that works than try anything original. So much attention will be paid to The O Factor that the other networks will be looking for their own Olbermanns, newsmen with differing values and opinions. After all, in Ed Murrow's day, right-wingers Fulton Lewis Jr. and Walter Winchell were also on the air. A whole new audience will emerge for the network evening news when it stops being, as Arianna Huffington put it, "the referee, pretending there are two sides to every issue." As Murrow suggested, there actually could be three, or even one.
Watch for viruses in Valentine's Day e-mails, FBI says
Categorized as malicious software or malware, the e-mail directs the recipient to click on a link that will retrieve the e-card. Once the link is clicked, malware is automatically downloaded to the users computer. According to the FBI, a botnet is dispersed into the computers internal system. Once this happens, the computer can be controlled by the invading third party. It affects almost every type of Microsoft operating system, and once the virus infiltrates the computers files, the files can be manipulated or destroyed. The FBI warns the public not to open e-mails from unknown users or click on unfamiliar links. The FBI has established a Web site dedicated to alerting the public of any new e-scams at www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm.
When Student Writing Could be a Red Flag
Falco, in fact, says that Virginia Tech's guide largely outlines procedures that were already informally in place prior to the April massacre. The document – which Falco stresses is meant only to provide guidelines, and is open for revision – offers suggestions regarding when and how faculty members should speak with the student directly, and when to involve department leadership, the counseling center, dean's office or university-wide justice system. The document also reflects the tightrope its drafters were walking, leaving ample room for intuition and judgment in identifying disturbing writing and offering a series of questions instructors might find helpful in distinguishing creative and literary explorations of themes like violence, drugs and suicide, from a threat or cry for help.

Randy Bowser composes music for the production of "Dorian -- The ...
He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Question: You worked in Los Angeles? Answer: I kept very busy in Los Angeles, unlike the conscious image, there is plenty of theater. I had a featured role on "CHiPS." It's been long enough now that I will just admit that it's the only episode I've ever seen. It was great fun. And little walk-on things in shows that came and went, independent films. I kept busy. Q: Why did you move to Salem? A: There's always more to the story. A major relationship ended, and that was rather traumatizing. I was having difficulty finding motivation to do anything. And finding out that mom (who lived in Salem) needed so much; she wasn't doing well. It seemed like a good time to move here.
